GED Scholars Initiative

Meet a GED Scholar

Amenan Diby Amenan Diby

Majors: Management Information System
Minors: Accounting
Graduation Date: August 2005

Residence: Kent, OH
Born: Ivory Coast, West Africa

I moved to the U.S.A. in May 1996 at the age of 19. Unable to enroll in a regular high school because of the difference in the education system and my age, I had to learn the English language and then prepare for the GED examination. I started my GED classes in the Fall of 1997, and I got my GED diploma in April of 1998. I have never looked down on my diploma because in my country we do not have any second chances for education like the GED. I can care less of what others say about the GED diploma, because what counts is how I see myself. I am very proud of getting my diploma and of being where I am in my education today. I have been working to take care of myself, to send money for my daughter back home, and I have been going to school since 1998. I cannot wait until my graduation in August, 2005. I am planning to go to graduate school for the MBA, but I do not have the funds yet and I want to finish my MBA with no loans and no school bills. I know that God will provide for me. I am glad to be part of the GED Scholars program here at Kent State University. The people involved are very helpful and willing to give of their time. The GED Stipend has helped also and I thank all of them for their hard work. I have 4 classes left to finish and my daughter is very close to coming. I am more than excited to see all that God has helped me through. It has not been easy, but at the end of every semester, my grades have given me more strength to keep going. I want to take this occasion to sincerely thank all the people involved and in charge of the GED Scholars Initiative and tell them that very soon I will take off my hat in salutation to them.

Goals: To go to graduate school with everything paid for.
Aspirations:To raise my daughter to be one of the best assets to society.
Areas of interest: Computer and Accounting.
