GED Scholars Initiative

Meet a GED Scholar

Kimberly L. Patterson

Majors: Bachelor of Arts, Psychology and Sociology
Minors: Philosophy and Conflict Management
Graduation Date: May 2003

Residence: Louisville, OH
Hometown: Canton, OH

I have worked as a server/bartender for 20 plus years in Columbus and local establishments. I did not want to become an aged server, and wanted to get more out of life, but continued to put off my desire to do so because I have children to support. I have three children and six grandchildren, and it was not until a car accident in 1995, while not life threatening, was thought provoking with regard to my future. I completed and passed the GED exam in 1995. Enrolled and studied for a year at Stark State College of Technology and then transferred to Kent State University to study Nursing. I later switched my majors to Psychology and Sociology. I am currently working in an internship position with the Ohio Literacy Resource Center, GED Scholars Initiative, to assist with the develop of a mentoring training modules for the GED Scholars Initiative Mentoring Program. This program is being designed to help ease the transition into student life, and ensure academic success for GED Scholars at Kent State University.

Goals: Master in Social Work or a graduate program in Sociology.
Aspirations: To make a contribution to the body of knowledge.
Areas of interest: Children protection agencies, group homes, and foster care programs as well as adults in higher education, and inequalities in society.
