Peer 2 Peer Mentoring Program

Definition of Mentor

Overview

Mission: The GED Scholars Initiative Mentoring Program supports GED graduates attending KSU, ensuring they receive beneficial, on-going support and guidance by encouraging community building and promoting a positive, successful learning experience.

Mentors and Mentees will…

  • Encourage the consideration of unexplored possibilities.
  • Plan and implement goals for success.
  • Explore potential career opportunities.
  • Develop strategies for negotiating the university system.


    Building Relationships

    Purpose: Mentoring provides an opportunity for individuals to learn from each other in order to help one another grow in their academic experience at KSU.

    Outcomes for Mentors and Mentees include:

  • Communicating effectively to increase knowledge of the university system through building resources and networking infrastructures.
  • Developing skills to clarify expectations and establish realistic goals.
  • Demonstrating openness to change and a willingness to investigate opposing ideas, concepts, theories, and realities.
  • Creating a bond of respect and integrity through the sharing of life experience and feelings.


    Training

    Purpose: To provide mentors with strategies to support the academic and personal goals of the mentees.

    Goals

  • Mentors will be able to create a culturally sensitive environment.
  • Mentors will know how to find out about University policies.
  • Mentors will develop strategies and tools that will enhance the academic and personal skills of the mentees.
  • Mentors will model positive communication techniques and problem solving skills.
