This is a fact sheet that includes topics ranging from the scope of literacy in the United States, literacy, families and children, children learning to read, and reading in the home to parental involvement, the impact of welfare reform and early childhood intervention.
The synthetic estimates of adult literacy proficiency presented here combine information from the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) and the 1990 U.S. Census to estimate adult literacy proficiencies in geographical areas not adequately sampled by NALS. These areas include many states, congressional districts, counties, county subdivisions, large towns and cities.
