[Introduction to HTML]](../Graphics/htmled.gif)
Tables are one of the major advances introduced with HTML 3.0. Web authors working in the sciences were especially concerned with HTML 2.0's inability to display information in table format. Tables are quite flexible, however, they are one of the more difficult elements to learn. Tables provide a prime example of why web page authors want to use a good HTML editor--specificlly one that has a WYSIWYG interface. To understand what I mean, simply look at the code involved in designing the table below. <TABLE>...</TABLE>
Tables are inserted between the <BODY>...</BODY> tags. If you want your table to appear as if each cell is framed you need to add a BOARDER attribute. You determine the thickness of a table boarder by assigning the border a numberic value. Tables in HTML 2.0 are ploted using <TR> Table Rows, which can contain either <TH> Table Headings, or <TD> Table Data. Tables may also contain <CAPTION>...</CAPTION> tags. In HTML 3.0 tables are ploted using <THEAD>, <TBODY>, and <TFOOT> tags. The <THREAD> tag is used to plot the table headers, and uses the <TH> tag to do this. In the <TBODY> are placed the <TR> and <TD> tags. The <TFOOT> tag is used at the end of the table. HTML browsers are backward complient, so they will properly read the older code. If your reader is using an older browser it will still interperet the table properly, but wil not include the floating header and footer.
I will now describe some of the new HTML 3.0 table attributes, all of which are optional.
