Many job seekers get more interviews by using the telephone than any other method. Most calls take only a minute or so and the results are more immediate. The job seeker must, however, be prepared to effectively sell his/her skills clearly and persuasively and to make telephone contacts an effective job search strategy. The caller must also know in advance about the organization and job description.

One of the most common reasons for rejection is that the person calling is not prepared to communicate his/her value and benefits, wasting employers time. Be prepared so you aren't one of those 90% who don't state their purpose clearly.

Some suggestions to help you effectively use the telephone:

1. Get and use the name of the person with whom you are talking. Write it down.
2. Develop a pleasing telephone voice and be aware of your telephone manners.
3. Listen to what the prospective employer has to say about the job and what he/she is looking for in an employee.
4. Use correct grammar.
5. Introduce yourself and ask to speak to the person in charge of hiring.
6. Quickly state your purpose for calling and find out if the job opening has been filled.
7. Ask for an interview at the earliest possible date. Don't be afraid to ask for an interview, but don't be pushy about it.
8. Keep accurate records and information about the job and the interview date and place.
9. Say "thank you" before you say "good bye".
