The Atlantic Rowing Race

In 1966, Chay Blyth and Captain John Ridgeway rowed across the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland in a 20 ft open rowing boat, named the English Rose III. Thirty years on from this heroic journey Chay Blyth has offered a chance of a lifetime for intrepid explorers to participate in "The Atlantic Rowing Race 1997".

GLACIER had its origins long ago when Stephanie Shipp (perpetual graduate student), John Anderson (intrepid polar explorer) and Besse Dawson (intrepid instructor at Pearland High School) got together and decided that Antarctica was a neat vehicle for studying Earth's systems. Through Antarctica, many concepts of earth science, ecology, and environmental science can be explored and experienced in detail.

Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory

The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) carries out interdisciplinary scientific investigations in oceanography, marine meteorology, and related subjects. PMEL programs focus on coastal and open ocean observations and modeling to improve our understanding of the physical and geochemical processes operating in the world oceans, to define the forcing functions and the processes driving ocean circulation and the global climate system, and to improve environmental forecasting capabilities and other supporting services for marine commerce and fisheries. Results from PMEL research activities contribute to NOAA's strategic goals of implementing seasonal-to-interannual climate forecasts, assessing and predicting decadal-to-centennial climate change, advancing short-term warning and forecast services, and building sustainable fisheries.

Integrated Earth Information Servers (IEIS)

The information that appears on an IEIS arrives via the experimental nation-wide Unidata Internet Data Distribution (IDD) network, which automatically delivers real-time environmental observations from a variety of observing systems around the globe to servers at Unidata universities. At the heart of each server on each campus (and on this IEIS computer at NSF's Atmospheric Science Division) is a Unidata Local Data Manager (LDM), which captures the data and stores them as each site wishes. Sites may then use Unidata analysis and display programs to transform the data into easy-to-understand, familiar forms and to combine them with environmental data from other sources.
