Recommended Trade Books for Adult Literacy Programs

Understanding the Symbols

At the top of each page you will find bibliographical information about the book, including the ISBN numbers you will need for purchasing them. (Note: All these titles are available at 40% off the list from Book Wholesalers, Inc. Call the OLRC if you need further information.)

The next section contains suggestions for Recommended Audience by program type: ABE/ABLE, Family Literacy, and ESOL. The designations Picture and Young Adult indicate type of book and general reading level. Categories that apply are marked with a Yes.

Under the section marked General Information searchers will find the book type or genre (as many as apply) e.g. biography, true story, non-fiction. GED Descriptors refer to the sections of the GED that are relevant to the book: literature/arts, social studies, history, math, writing. The Keywords section shows the searchable words that capture important ideas and themes of the book and the search pathways in the database.

The Summary often mentions the illustrations and special resources as well as giving a synopsis. The Teaching Ideas suggests writing and discussion topics, thematic units, possible companion titles, and strategies for classroom use. Web sites for extending the book are often included.
