3:30 - 5:30 p.m. for teachers and other school personnel

Description: Dr. Lyon will summarize the converging scientific research that provides clear information about : (1) how children learn to read, (2) the reasons why many children have difficulty doing so, and (3) which instructional reading approaches and practices have the highest probability of success with developing readers. An emphasis will be placed on discussing screening and assessment approaches that help in identifying kindergarten and first grade children who are at-risk for reading failure, and the identification, development, and implementation of early intervention programs that prevent reading difficulties. Likewise, converging research findings that bear on the remediation of reading difficulties will be presented and discussed with an eye toward practical implementation in classroom settings.
