What is ABLE?
The Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program provides educational opportunities for adults who lack a foundation of literacy skills needed for effective citizenship, further education, and productive employment. ABLE programs are held in public schools, learning centers, community-based centers, homeless shelters, correctional institutions, colleges, work sites, and institutions for the disabled. These programs provide free instruction in basic literacy, workplace literacy, family literacy, and English as for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction, and preparation for the General Education Development (GED) test. In Fiscal Year 2005, 127 different basic instructional grant projects were awarded to local providers for instruction and services.
How is ABLE funded?
The ABLE program is administered through the Ohio Department of Education, Division of Vocational and Adult Education, and is authorized by the Adult Education Act as amended by the National Literacy Act of 1991. Budgets approved by the Ohio General Assembly provide supplemental support under the same guidelines as the federal legislation. For additional information, please see
