This policy was created to offer programs consistent guidelines concerning those students who are, and who are not, eligible for ESOL services as well as setting priorities for these services.
The Ohio Department of Education funded Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) programs that conduct English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes are open to adults 18 years of age and older:
- who are out-of-school;
- who have limited ability in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language
Persons in the United State under a student visa (F1 - US Immigration Service Status) are not permitted to attend these classes. (See attached Fact Sheet from the Immigration and Naturalization Service.)
