Beginnings 15

Every year since 1998, the Ohio Literacy Resource Center celebrates the outstanding writing accomplishments of adults who are participants in Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) programs throughout the state of Ohio.

The OLRC invites ABLE students to submit original writings for review. All genres are acceptable. The submissions, however, must be original. Original means that the work must not be copied from any source.

Accepted submissions are published in a softbound book, Beginnings. Students whose work is accepted are invited to attend the day-long Ohio Writers’ Conference, along with their teacher and one paid guest.

The 15th annual event will take place in the Atrium of the Ohio State House in Columbus on May 18, 2012. The day begins with fourth-generation storyteller Lyn Ford sharing a few of her “Home Fried Tales”. The keynote address, Walking through Walls: Writing the Simple Truth, by author Katie Daley will follow. Guests will then interact in a workshop led by David Hassler, the 2006 Ohio Poet of the Year. After an awards luncheon, Beginnings authors are invited to share their work at an open mike session.

Next you will do an online tutorial explaining the proper way to paraphrase and cite sources. Finally there will be an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge by citing works for two mock assignments. Additional information and activities relating to Internet plagiarism are also available in this webquest.
