Expectations of Peer Coaching

Role of the teacher coach is to build capacity to implement effective instructional practices to improve teacher achievement.

Teacher Coach Qualifications

  • Knowledge of quality teaching and learning
    • Planning for instruction (lesson planning; SMARTER; adaptations)
    • Effective instruction for adults with learning disabilities
    • Assistive technology
    • Linking screening to instruction
    • Classroom accommodations
    • GED accommodations (forms; process)

    Role of the administrator coach is to build capacity to implement systemic changes to more effectively serve adults with learning difficulties and disabilities and improve student achievement.

    Administrator Coach Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of policies and procedures
    • LD screening instruments
    • LD Policy and Planning Guide
    • Planning for systemic change related to LD/Special Needs
    • Program documentation and recordkeeping

    Training

  • Participate and complete coaching training
    • Use coaching as a tool to enhance ongoing professional dialogue that develops self-directedness and produces high impact teaching and learning
    • Define coaching process, roles and ABLE coaching model (gradual release of responsibility)
    • Differentiate between peer coaching and mentoring and peer coaching and evaluating
    • Reflect on the Five States of mind to design questions that mediate thinking and behavior, then practice paraphrasing and questioning techniques
    • Create coaching framework maps to use with coaching conversations
    • Practice effective interpersonal communication skills (listening, trust and relationship-building strategies)
    • Reflect on personal coaching strengths and challenges
  • Network with coordinator and other coaches regularly through website and electronic lists
  • Complete a practice coaching session in September

    Responsibilities

  • Complete a Letter of Intent
  • Secure a Letter of Reference
  • Complete Online Profile Form

    Commitment

  • Complete required paperwork and forms
  • Keep accurate records and evaluations
  • Schedule time for pre, during and post coaching activities
  • Complete journaling log
  • Evaluate this process at end of year with Special Needs Task Force
