In working with students from differing backgrounds and cultures, it is important to make sure that assessment is "connected to the learner's world, frames of reference, and values'" (Wlodkowski and Ginsberg, 1995, p. 237). Because portfolios are student-generated, they are particularly suited to diverse learners.
