Norm-referenced exam

Norm-referenced exams, such as the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), determine students' scores by comparing their results to those of others who have taken the same test.

Criterion-referenced exam

Criterion-referenced tests, such as the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment (CASAS), do not compare students, but instead assess the extent (often expressed as a percentage) to which learners have mastered certain skills.
