ESOL Pilot Project

In addition to the Distance Learning Partnership initiative, emphasis will also be placed on creating, establishing and implementing a distance learning environment for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to provide and expand learning opportunities to adults who lack basic understanding of English. The purpose of the Distance Learning Pilot Project is to explore ways to enable adult learners who cannot enroll in and/or participate in the traditional classroom-based instruction because of barriers that include, but are not limited to, distance, conflicting family or work schedules and/or waiting lists.

This will be done through expansion of distance learning to ESOL students utilizing the English For All, free Web-based multimedia system for intermediate level adults learning English as a second language. English For All was created as part of the Cyberstep Project, funded by the United States Department of Education and developed by the Division of Adult Career Education (DACE) of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The English for All, free Web-based multimedia system includes an interactive Web site, five stand-alone video tapes, five CD-ROMs and printable materials that are available in Portable Document Format (PDF) or in Rich Text Format (RT) for students and teachers. The four ESOL Distance-Learning classrooms will provide basic educational services to a segment of the population currently in need of services, but not being reached, and expand services already in practice. Recruitment of students will be the responsibilities of the local pilot program.
