Who is the audience for Story Kits?
The audience originally intended to experience the Story Kits were groups of students in family literacy projects. One component of a family literacy program is called "PACT" time, meaning "Parents and Children Together." PACT time is an instructional portion of family literacy programming during which parents and children reinforce for each other the learning that has taken place in other portions of their program. It is a time for reciprocal and interactive learning and teaching between parents and children. This is the essence of the Story Kits.
However, the power of using literature-based, participatory parent-child activities to foster reciprocal learning is not limited to families with reading difficulties. The same educational theories are applicable to all parent-child pairs. The Story Kits could be used for any intergenerational programming. This online tutorial makes that use possible. The activities in the Story Kits were originally designed to work with children aged four to ten. Some of the Story Kits are aimed at the higher end of that age range. Included in this web site which serves as an online guide to the Story Kits are suggested activities for younger siblings or suggestions to skew the activity to work with both younger and older children.
