Family Programming at the Public Library -- Story Kits
The developer of the Story Kits
Laura Bercovitz, Program Manager, of the Adult Learning Resource Center in Des Plaines, Illinois developed the Story Kits, compiling the titles and composing the accompanying activities. She wrote the original, print Facilitator's Guides, which were specific to each Story Kit and are contained in each Story Kit. The Story Kits were compiled in 1999 through a grant from the Illinois State Library Literacy Office to illustrate appropriate parent-child together activities to family literacy practitioners. Cynthia Colletti, Family Literacy Consultant, Illinois State Library, composed this online guide to the Story Kits targeted to librarians. She composed the sections that describe what they are, who can use them, why a library would want to use them, who the audience is, what the educational theory is upon which they are based, and how you borrow one. This online guide parallels Bercovitz's original Guides, with alteration to suit the needs of librarians. The activities are identical, but, for instance, additional sections were added such as "Library Outcomes," "Directions for Implementation Summarized," "Things To Do Ahead of Time," "Recommended Age of Children," "Ways to Alter Activity for Younger Siblings" and "Notes To Myself - Lessons Learned for Next Time."
