Goals FAQ
1. I still do not see the difference in primary goals: to improve basic skills and to improve basic skills to increase involvement in children's education (or the next one). Are these not both still improving basic skills- the same thing, just in a functional context? I can see the 2 secondary family literacy goals, but not the primary as they are already covered.
Answer: Yes, both are still addressing improving basic skills but in the functional context of increasing involvement in children's education.
2. Are all the primary goals in question 12 keyed into the ABLELink program to one of the 4 Core Indicators of Performance? If some are not, will students who choose them be counted since they do not have a CIP goal? We are looking at the ESOL primary goals and the two family literacy primary goals.
Answer: Yes, all primary goal selections are aligned with the State Core Indicators of Performance.
3. Can goals be changed?
Answer: Yes
4. Will ESOL students choose improve basic skills as their primary goal?
Answer: They should mark "To Improve English Language Skills."
5. What happens if a student's secondary goal is achieved but not his/her primary goal?
Answer: The primary goal track will simply not report achievement.
6. Does a secondary goal need to be tracked if it is marked?
Answer: Yes. If you mark a secondary goal, it must be tracked.
7. If a student meets his/her secondary goal and not his/her primary, can we switch the two?
Answer: Not on an arbitrary basis by staff but only if the student has indicated that his/her primary goal has appropriately changed.
8. Will there be professional development on goal setting?
Answer: Yes, goal setting will be one of the targeted professional development activities for FY 2001.
9. How do we help students set realistic goals without telling them what their goals should be?
Answer: The same way you have always helped your students set their goals. Remember that not all goals have to be reported. Such unreported goals can be maintained within program documentation including the goals form. Materials and resources are available in your O-PAS Manual. See #8 above.
10. Can a goal be changed? If so, when?
Answer: Yes, goals may be changed and should be changed to reflect the students' developing goals and needs. These goals may be changed at any time during the students' time with the program as long as they are being changed to reflect the students' appropriate real desires and needs and not just to be able to claim a "success" for reporting purposes by staff.
11. Is it better to have one goal and meet it, or have a primary and secondary goal and meet only one?
Answer: It is preferable if the student achieves his/her primary goal.
12. Does one specific goal have more weight that another goal?
Answer: All goals tied to a core indicator are equally important.
