The Uniform Portfolio System (UPS) FAQ

1. Will we learn more about the Uniform Portfolio System?
Answer: Yes. More training is currently being planned for FY 2001.

2. For the UPS, who decides and develops the Individual Learning Plan (ILP)?
Answer: You may either use the ILP that is part of your sample Goals Form (see O-PAS Manual-Appendix) or you may create your own. If you create your own ILP, you must include all of the key components of the sample ILP.

3. What forms must be included within the UPS folder?
Answer: A goals form, ILP, the documentation logs including supporting evidence, and standardized assessments/results. Other forms such as the Registration, Progress, Exit, anecdotal records, and attendance must be kept, but the program should keep confidential forms in a separate "teacher's file."

4. Is there or will there be a standardized portfolio?
Answer: There is a committee working on designing a standardized portfolio folder. Programs will have the opportunity to use these folders or design their own.

5. When do we use the UPS and when do we use standardized assessment?
Answer: There are several scenarios for each. Please review your O-PAS Manual for details.

6. Can a Uniform Portfolio be used as a placement test?
Answer: No. The UPS was never intended or designed for this purpose.

7. Can I keep a 3 ring binder as my students' portfolio?
Answer: Yes, as long as each student has one. There are many physical types of portfolios that could be used such as file folders, three ring binders, pocket folders, etc.
