Specified cities with their newspaper release dates

Columbus, Ohio--The General Educational Development (GED) Testing Service in Washington, D.C. will release a new and completely redesigned battery of GED tests on Jan. 1, 2002. Scores obtained for GED tests taken prior to that time will not carry over or be credited to the new GED tests.

Students who pass the GED tests receive an Ohio High School Equivalence Diploma.

The Ohio Department of Education urges those who have not passed all parts of the GED to retake the exams before the new tests are introduced in January 2002.

"By Dec. 31, 2001, GED candidates who have not passed the current GED tests will lose credit for all passing scores they have received and will have to take all sections of the test again," explained Joan Myers, State GED Administrator with the Ohio Department of Education.

To encourage individuals to complete GED testing by December 2001, the Ohio Department of Education is sponsoring November 2000 as "Test Out" Month. Those planning to take the tests must pre-register at one of the 80 GED testing centers throughout Ohio.

Like the existing exam, the new GED tests will measure what students should learn through a four-year high school course of study in reading, writing, social studies, mathematics and science. The new exams, however, will differ significantly in format and content.

According to Myers, the biggest change is in the area of mathematics. She explained, "On the current tests, math is a one-part exam. On the new GED, there will be two parts to the math test. The first part will measure how well a student solves math problems with the use of a calculator. The second will test how a student completes basic math computation without the use of a calculator."

Current GED tests will continue to be administered until December 31, 2001.
