Welcome to the new OLRC book club called REAL Books. REAL stands for Reading Enjoyment for Adult Learners. In reading discussion groups, people share their ideas about a book that they have all read. The difference with REAL Books is that the discussion will take place through web site email. All students in adult and family literacy programs can join. Teachers can join, too, as interested readers.

Who is behind REAL Books?

For several years the Reading Group at OLRC has been reviewing books to find books that are suitable for adult learners. All the approved books form a searchable database of nearly 700 books that you can explore on the web site . The Reading Group thought that adult learners would also like to experience the pleasure of exchanging views on books. REAL Books is the result.

Where can I get the books?

Each participant should have a copy. Check your local library or book store. The paperbacks cost between $4.95-$7.50 on Amazon.com. Teachers can contact the Ohio Literacy Resource Center at 800-675-2875 for information on ordering for a class through Book Wholesalers, Inc. OLRC Teaching Guides with helpful reading activities are available to read or download at http://literacy.kent.edu/eureka/tradebooks/instruct_suggestions.html

How can I register for REAL Books?

Click here to register. You will receive an email confirmation including your password. Then you will use the password and your username to log in.

How can I prepare for the discussion?

  • Read at least half of the book before the discussion begins.
  • Keep track of questions that you might ask or passages that you think are interesting. You might want to use sticky notes or make a list.
  • Respect others' opinions, even if they are different from your own.
  • No aggressive, defamatory, obscene, or sexual messages will be allowed. Keep it kind! Keep it clean!
