You may be interested in this announcement from the National Coalition for
Literacy.   NCL will be putting a US House Caucus on Adult Literacy hearing
together in February with support from Southwest.  If you have not already
asked your US House representative to join the Caucus, now would be a good
time to do so.

Southwest Airlines Becomes the

Official Airline of the National Coalition for Literacy

airline of the National Coalition for Literacy! Southwest Airlines, through
its dynamic Community Affairs and Grassroots philanthropic work, gives back
to the community by championing causes that matter most in the daily lives
of their customers. Southwest recognizes the importance of adult literacy in
shaping virtually every major issue

nalPriorities.pdf>  important to adults and their families in the United
States.

Nationally, one in seven adults will not be able to complete a job
application, an elections ballot, or even read their child's holiday card
this year. Southwest Airlines has committed to advocating for adult literacy
by supporting NCL in elevating adult education and literacy issues with
Congress.

Beginning with the NCL 2012 Membership Drive, Southwest Airlines is donating
two airlines tickets to be drawn for organizations that join or renew their
Membership with NCL for 2012. It's important to have a strong, broad-based
membership in order to advance adult education issues in Congress. NCL has
recently restructured its membership

more flexible and feasible for prospective Members to join and participate
in the Coalition. This will enable some NCL Members who cannot travel to
Washington, D.C. to participate in NCL Meetings and meet with their
legislators on the Hill.

"Now is the time for more organizations within our field and related fields
to come together for adult literacy. The restructuring of NCL's membership
makes it easier for that to happen," says Marty Finsterbusch, President of
NCL. "This is about advancing the movement for adult literacy in our
country."

Following the Membership Drive, Southwest Airlines will support several
experts and advocates to travel to DC for an Adult Literacy Caucus Briefing.
Currently, 30 House Members have joined

bipartisan Adult Literacy Caucus. "We need to grow that base to 100,
leverage the Caucus to educate fellow Members of Congress and to advocate
for adult literacy. Bringing in the best adult literacy experts and
advocates in the country and meeting with policymakers on our issues will
help to do that," urges Jackie Taylor, Advocacy Chair of NCL.

Finally, Southwest Airlines will support two individuals to travel to the
Literacy Leadership Awards in September 2012. Travel has increasingly been a
barrier for advocacy leaders and Southwest is stepping up to the plate to
help keep adult literacy issues in the forefront with Members of Congress.
