What Are the Time Commitments?
How often and where will I work with my student?
Once the literacy program pairs you with a student, you and the student will decide where to meet and how often to meet. Some programs provide space for tutoring and some tutor/student pairs meet at local libraries. Tutors meet with their student at least once a week for one to two hours. The more you can meet with your student, the more progress he or she can make.
How long will I be working with my student?
Its possible to work with the same student for several years. Progress depends on how much time you and your student can spend together each week.
An important word about commitment.
Being a literacy volunteer is a rewarding experience for both the tutor and the student. To keep the experience positive be prepared to make a long term commitment to your student. If for some reason you must stop working with your student, make the transition to a new tutor as smooth as possible by introducing your student to the new tutor and by having the new tutor help with a few sessions before taking over completely
