Introduction to
A Different Kind of Smart

The Lake County Adult Learning Connection, a collaborative effort of the College of Lake County, the Waukegan Public Library and Literacy Volunteers of Lake County, is pleased to share with you the video and manual, A Different Kind of Smart. Students in our Literacy/Adult Basic Education program created this important production to reach out to those who share their reading problems. This gift is for you, your program in general and your adult learners in particular.

Whether you would like to open a discussion about literacy, or establish an acting troupe, the accompanying manual will offer concrete suggestions. The audience for this video is limited only by your imagination. Some groups that might be interested include:

Tutors who are being trained to help adult learners.

Librarians who need exposure to this real issue.

A class of students, or an individual, enrolled in an ABE/literacy class.

People who might want to start a group of adult learners.

Spouses and significant others of adult learners who might want to know about the problem.

Someone who might wish to experiment with an acting group of adult learners.

Civic or community organizations that are interested in learning about adult education/literacy issues.

Please let us know how you used the video and the response to it. We hope you will enjoy and find productive this unique look into adult learners' heads and hearts.

Sincerely,

Paula Phipps, College of Lake County, pphipps@clc.cc.il.us

Carol Morris, Waukegan Public Library, cmorris@nslsilus.org
