We are looking for participants in a pilot project for adult educators interested in incorporating health literacy into instruction.

  • Health Care Access and Navigation
  • Chronic Disease Management
  • Disease Prevention and Screening

The Health Literacy Study Circles are organized into 3 training sessions with assignments between sessions. There is space for up to 15 participants and we ask that you attend all 3 sessions.

Participating teachers will receive a $50 stipend for each training session contingent upon completed assignments.

During this study circle, participants will:

  • Develop a shared definition of "health literacy"
  • Identify literacy-related barriers and issues that prevent people from getting the health care they need
  • Analyze health-related tasks to identify the basic literacy skills required
  • Teach sample lessons designed to build students' literacy and numeracy skills
  • Create original lessons based on students' needs

Teachers will also receive a materials/equipment budget for project implementation in your classroom.

DESE Professional Development credits will be offered for participation.

    To Register

You can register at our online registration page. The registration deadline is September 25 for the St. Louis sessions and October 23 for the Columbia sessions. Please remember you need to attend all 3 sessions. Registration is limited to 15 participants, so please register early! You will receive a confirmation notice with maps closer to the date of the workshop.

This is a free workshop. Materials and lunch will be provided. Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the workshop or a fee of $100 to cover materials will be assessed.
