Volunteers

Project Learn volunteers make one-on-one tutoring a reality; it is your work and dedication that allows us to operate and to carry out our mission. As a Project Learn volunteer, we are committed to providing you with the resources you need to carry out your job.
  • Training- Each volunteer will receive thoughtfully planned and thorough training for his or her assigned job.

  • Follow-Up Training- Tutors and some volunteer assignments will be provided continuing education regarding new trends and developments to enhance their job performance.

  • Sound Guidance and Direction- Project Learn will provide all volunteers support, guidance and direction. We will do our best to answer all your questions in a quick and friendly manner.

  • Forum for Suggestions and Opinions- The Project Learn staff welcomes and encourages all suggestions and opinions by volunteers.

  • Recognition- Volunteers will receive recognition through promotion and awards or some other tangible form of appreciation. Staff members and students will treat each volunteer with dignity and respect.

Besides one-on-one tutoring, Project Learn has many opportunities for volunteers to donate their time and resources to the literacy program. They are as follows:

  • Part-time tutor: Fills in for tutors who are on extended vacations, leaves, etc. Trained as a regular volunteer literacy tutor.

  • Office Associate: Performs various office duties and assists staff with general office work, including data entry, class preparation and phone coverage.

  • Classroom Aide: Helps instruct small group classes in math, reading, writing, life and work skills. A staff teacher prepares all lesson plans.

  • Computer Instructor: Instructs computer classes in typing, reading, math and the Internet.

  • Summer Learning Camp: Assists staff with lessons, crafts and activities for children participating in the learning camp. Runs for six weeks each summer.

  • Fundraiser/Special Events: Helps with planning, executing and working at fund development activities. Often a weekend role. Also involves help with mailings and phone calls.

Days and times for each opportunity range from morning, afternoon and evening commitments and are flexible to fit your schedule. One -on-one tutor, part-time tutor, classroom aide and computer instructor opportunities require a high school diploma or GED. For all other non-tutoring volunteer opportunities, you must be at least 13 years old.
