Workplace focus vs. Workforce focus. With a new emphasis on curriculum design and classroom methodology within the field of adult literacy calling for the adult learner to be an active creator rather than a passive participant, the following question has arisen: Should the goal of adult literacy education be to simply make people more skilled employees or to generally empower employees as individuals? Advocates of workplace education are concerned with a curriculum based largely on a needs analysis and a linguistic task analysis of the language and communication patterns of a particular workplace. On the other hand, advocates of workforce education favor empowering the worker and lean toward worker-centered learning that addresses the needs of the whole person. Today, the lines between a "workplace" focus and a "workforce" focus are becoming blurred, with programs recognizing the importance of being sensitive to the needs and concerns of workers as well as considering the needs and concerns of the workplace (Grognet, 1997). |
