FROM THE PRESIDENT
The membership of our organization is made up of adult educators
serving a diverse population. We have special interest groups in
Basic Education and Literacy (ABE/ESL), Community Agencies,
Community and Technical Colleges/Universities, General Education
Development (GED), Post Secondary Adult Vocational Education
(PAVE), Special Needs, and Workplace Education. As diverse as we
are in membership, I believe first and foremost that we all share
the same common goal of professional development as educators to
meet the needs of students we serve.
We have become a very large adult education organization in our state and, thus, yield a potentially large influence in matters of both adult education instructional development and within the political arena. We need to keep sight of our mission to serve the adult learners to the best of our ability by staying current in our field. We also need to keep abreast of the political changes that will effect our special interest groups. These are our individual responsibilities as professional adult educators so that we can make a difference in "Meeting Future Forces."

Writing Workshop Held
On Saturday, November 18 82 enthusiastic, interested, hungry
adult educators participated in the Second Annual Northwest ABLE
Regional event, held this year at Apollo Joint Vocational School
in Lima. This "Learn and Share Writing Workshop", provided
hands-on experiences in small group settings with plenty of time
for interaction and feedback. Evaluations were uniformly
positive since the approach is particularly appealing to adult
educators who definitely appreciate practical techniques for
teaching/learning.
As I looked over the crowd on November 18th, I realized once again, just how many creative, dedicated individuals there are working as adult educators in our region. I'm sure those of you who are reading this can also think of someone you know - teacher, volunteer, administrator, or contributor, who deserves to be recognized. Why not take a moment RIGHT NOW, get out your Membership Directory, turn to page 69, and complete the nomination form!!
P.S. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all of those neat Northwest Adult Education individuals who attended November 18th. An equally large "thanks" to those whose efforts made it all possible.

Students To Host 1996 Conference
Students from the Central Ohio Technical College and OSU-Newark
Campus are preparing to host the Adult learners on Campus (ALOC)
Conference scheduled for October 1996. Originating in 1982 for
nontraditional students at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford,
the conference addresses the question: What are the special needs
and concerns of adults pursuing their educational goals?
Students and interested faculty exchange information through
presentations and workshop activities. Two- and four-year
institutions from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, and West Virginia participated. One unique feature
about ALOC Conferences is that adult learners plan and operate
these gatherings. Faculty serve as mentors in the process.
The Central Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education (COAACE) met on November 30. Dr. Yvonne Gustafson presented "Strategies for Sharing Information and Problem Solving: What Parent Education Has to Offer Adult Education." Dr. Gustafson is a parent educator at Grant Medical Center. In addition, she is affiliated with a private nonprofit organization, Esteem Strategies, Inc.
The next COAACE meeting is February 1, 1996. The tentative topic is "Q-Step" presented by Sarah Adams. Contact Connie Ackerman, President, at (614)466-4161 for details.
"Adult Learning" was the focus of the November 14 meeting of the East Central Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education (ECOAACE). Two ABLE educators, Peggy Ketner and Martha Blowers, from Licking County JVS Adult Resource Center share information about their programs. Jane Williams from the Newark Campus of OSU and Central Ohio Technical College discussed the Pathways program which serves welfare students with children.
