Interactive The goal of an interactive journal is to encourage immediate/brief or extended/reflective reader response. You may want to promote reader response by a) inserting questions, b) highlighting or embedding information only a few readers might want to check (as was done here) or c) by asking readers to suggest modifications or changes in recommended strategies.

Branching The goal of links or branching is to enable readers to find exactly what they need. Recommendations for further reading, media sources, etc. can be offered as an insert or link. If you wish to keep the main article short but realize some readers might want more information, you can provide separate inserts or links for this information.
