Tutor's Challenge:
Improving Vocabulary

*Sara
Adult Literacy Center

How do you improve a student's vocabulary so that she/he really knows and uses words in everyday language? I have students who really don't know what words like " fantastic", "sideways", "although" or even " major" means. They are smart about other things. Words that are things you can't see like "meanwhile" are really hard to explain. "Sideways" was used in a sentence like : He went at the problem sideways.
